Patience is not idly waiting around for things to happen. Patience is working toward a goal with reasonable time expectations for achieving that goal.

Too many times I think that we equate patience with doing nothing. Just waiting. I know I tend to just stop acting when I’m trying to be more patient. Instead, if you look up the definition of patience it says nothing about stopping. In fact it’s all about action. Here are some great definitions that I found in my search.

  1. Bearing provocation, annoyance, misfortune, trials or pain, without complaint, loss of temper, or irritation.

  2. Steadfast despite opposition, difficulty, or adversity.

  3. Quiet, steady perseverance.

  4. Even-tempered care.

  5. Diligence.

  6. Not hasty or impulsive

Steadfast and persevering really stand out to me. That means to keep pushing forward against adversity. There are not many things as challenging as changing your lifestyle. Changing your lifestyle is essential to losing weight and improving your health forever.

New Results = New Actions

In the battle of life, it’s easy to go with the flow like a leaf in the wind. But that will only take you where the wind wants to blow. If you have a desire to  go anywhere else then you have to push against the wind and stop going with the flow. A tree is steadfast and resists the wind. It grows tall and magnificent. It does not grow overnight but patiently digs its roots in deeper and grows taller with each passing storm. Drought causes roots to grow deeper.  Storms bring rain that provide nutrients for the tree to grow taller.  If the tree survives the droughts and storms it becomes stronger because of them.

So, here’s to life’s droughts and storms. I will patiently persevere and be a better person tomorrow than I am today.
